Missing The Target: The Worst Song Lyrics Put Into Music

Submitted by: Tony Shapiro

Many say writing lyrics for a song shouldn t be too difficult. Unfortunately, it is. The lyrics of song should be apt and should properly employ techniques used in good writing. But not all songwriters remember this, so they end up writing the worst song lyrics ever. To prove how bad these song lyrics can be, here are some of lyrics considered by esteemed music magazines and experts as some of the worst ever. This list includes song lyrics from respected songwriters who have written some of the best lyrics and created the best music ever. This goes to show that even those who have written some of the best songs ever can still create a few hideous creations every now and then.

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, by The Beatles

The Beatles is not just any band; their music has influenced the music industry the world over, and their reach can still be felt even today. Yet, when one reads the lyrics of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, one might reconsider their position in the music world, if only for a few seconds. The lyrics of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (sample: Desmond has his barrow in the market place…/ Molly is the singer in a band…/ Desmond says to Molly “Girl, I like your face” / And Molly says this as she takes him by the hand…/ Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah!…/ Lala how the life goes on… ) is nowhere near the achievements of the lyrics of some of their lesser songs. In fact, this Paul McCartney creation has been openly lashed out by John Lennon, calling it one of the worst McCartney has ever created.

She Bangs, by Ricky Martin

She Bangs is usually associated not to Ricky Martin, but reality talent show reject William Hung. Martin should thank Hung for dissociating the song from his otherwise sterling career; the lyrics of She Bangs also attest that the song isn t exactly his crowning glory. The lyrics are full of clich s and awful turn of phrases; the upbeat and cheeky music can hardly disguise its actual atrocity. I go crazy / ‘Cause she looks like a flower but she stings like a bee / Like every girl in history can t exactly be called ingenious, while the part of the lyrics that go I’m wasted by the way she moves / No one ever looked so fine / She reminds me that a woman only got one thing on her mind is potentially derogatory.

Barbie Girl, by Aqua

Citing Aqua s Barbie Girl as one of the songs with the worst lyrics may seem too obvious it doesn t need the citation. However, Aqua s attempt to use the Barbie doll into a metaphor for sexual fantasies (if anyone can call that a metaphor) was simply wrong and ineffective. For instance, the parts of the lyrics that went kiss me here, touch me there, hanky panky…/ You can touch, you can play, if you say: I’m always yours and Make me walk, make me talk, do whatever you please are borderline disturbing.
